on saturday we decided to get out of the house and do something fun as a family. i told john that we work hard all week long, the kids work hard all week in school, and sunday is church and a day to rest. so on saturdays we need some adventures! i knew of the olive mill in queen creek, and now we live just 15 minutes away, so why not! i don't think the kids were too excited, but i was!!
we enjoyed a fabulous lunch : sandwiches, caesar salads, sampling all the different types of olive oil at the tasting station, gelato... mmmmm! they even had chocolate oil & bacon oil - oh man!!
then we went on the 30-min tour. kameron had just asked me a few days ago about extra virgin olive oil - how it is made and why it's called "extra virgin" and why i buy that kind. i really had no idea, but we soon found out!
our tour guide! she was full of great information. we even learned all about "black"olives - ick! i don't think i'll ever buy them again! after the tour we were able to taste a bunch of different green olives (my favorite was stuffed with parmesan, and another had a whole almond inside - delish)! john didn't try any - he's NOT a fan of olives so i warned him that he probably wouldn't want to taste any :0)
this is the mill where all the work is done
this is in their small orchard outside the mill and store. this band was playing some great jazz music. such a nice atmosphere - and beautiful weather to boot. that day they had also started a small farmer's market.
an olive tree. their main orchard is a mile away. we learned that phoenix has the perfect conditions to grow olive trees. who would've thought!
i will say that afterwards john & the kids told me it was an awesome idea to go! i cannot wait for our next family adventure :0)
{and to have lunch again at the mill!}
