One big change was moving out of Maricopa and away from the orthodontist! We thought we were only going to need to drive back every couple of months -- not a big deal -- but boy were we wrong! The Herbst appliance has been a nightmare. There are rods, held in place by tiny little screws, that connect the bottom teeth to the top, protruding the jaw forward. Well, one screw has given us trouble -- four visits back to have it put back in. So here's the latest story...
It's a Saturday afternoon, Kaisha is sitting on the couch watching t.v., and the screw drops in her mouth. I call the on-call cell phone and leave a message, and after not hearing back from the technician four hours later, call again and leave another message. She finally calls the next morning -- Sunday. She wants us to meet her at 1:30pm in Maricopa. I tell her that we have church -- and so does she! So, 1:30 it is. We drop everyone off at the church and head out. At the office she can't get the screw to tighten. She applies this glue stuff hoping that it will hold it in there, gives me a little tool and trains me so I can do it myself instead of driving back out all the time. Well, the darned thing falls out just as we're leaving Maricopa. I'm furious! My whole point of driving out there on Sunday was to avoid pulling Kaisha from school. But the next day was early release, so it worked to our benefit! Monday morning I call the office, to find that the Dr. is in the Casa Grande office that day. Our options: wait until Tuesday or drive to CG after school. We couldn't let it go another day, so we took another drive. Once there they were very apologetic and he even told us that (of course!) in all his years this has never happened! Of course it would happen to us! He finds that the part where the screw fits is stripped (uh duh, just like I offered up to the tech on Sunday) and they'll need to take another impression and have it remade. So, he took the rods off and is gauging how her jaw does over these three weeks. It's already regressed a little so we know she has another few months to go. To our surprise, when leaving the office manager offered us a gift card: $10 gas at QT! Just for our trouble! We were excited -- because let's face it, I was in serious need of some gas at this point! Oh, and the kicker: they weren't sure if the part would be in by her next regular appt., which happens to be during fall break, and happens to coincide with all of our cleanings at the dentist (all of which were scheduled weeks ago, and will not be changed!).
It had better be in...
