Spent five hours at Torrance Memorial Hospital ER yesterday. I had been experiencing horrible pain in my back/right side and it was manageable for a couple days but then became severe. It almost felt like contractions - every 30 seconds! I couldn't sit or stand or lie down. It felt like I was being stabbed in my back for 5 seconds and then again 30 seconds later!
Once we got to the ER (in the middle of the night) I was in tears and just had to pace around to keep from completely melting down. The ER was crowded and we waited several hours. The doctor couldn't even really be sure of what was going on. They ran tests and took scans. Still nothing. They thought either pleurisy or a kidney infection. They gave me pain meds and an antibiotic and sent me home to rest and follow up with my Nephrologist. The narcotics made me super sick but thankfully the antibiotic helped within a couple days.
I was so overwhelmed with the generosity of our friends and ward members. They brought in meals for a couple weeks and really stepped in to help our family. I felt guilty as the kids are older and can help cook, but I knew I needed to let these sweet friends serve. So generous and much appreciated.
The follow up with my doctor didn't go well, and he couldn't give me any other answers. He told me to stop the narcotics so I wouldn't be sick, and added in another antibiotic. His guess was a kidney infection. For some stupid reason, I tolerate pain too well! I need to train myself to "feel". And not wait so long to seek help :-)
